Properties: Isopropyl alcohol is miscible in water, alcohol, ether, and chloroform. It dissolves ethylcellulose, polyvinyl butyral, oils, alkaloids, and natural resins. It can be separated from aqueous solutions by "salting out" with inorganic salts. It forms an azeotrope with water (87.7 wt% IPA) with a boiling point of 80.37 °C.
Safety & Toxicology: IPA vapor is denser than air and highly flammable. It should be kept away from heat and open flames. Both IPA and its metabolite, acetone, act as central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Ingestion, inhalation, or skin absorption can cause symptoms such as flushing, headache, dizziness, and nausea. Use in well-ventilated areas with protective gloves.
